Tobacco Age Verification

Tribal Governments and States Governments share concerns about tobacco, public health and prevention of sales to minors. NCAI is discussing a proposal with a group of state Attorneys General for cooperation on age verification procedures for tobacco sales. Many tribes already have age verification regulations and procedures in place, but this is not widely known. In addition, age verification for internet sales is of particular concern to public health advocates, and the technology and procedures for age verification over the internet seem to be in a state of development that warrants further discussion.

This project fits with the increasing concerns within Indian country about the health effects of tobacco. Check out this CDC Report, and NCAI Resolution ABQ-05-050.

We want to scope out the issues that might be relevant to a cooperative project on age verification, such as:

  • A focus on youth smoking prevention
  • Existing tribal models of age verification codes and procedures
  • A potential project to develop a model tribal code and procedures for age verification
  • Acquiring and disseminating technology and procedures for age verification for long distance sales

If your tribe has an existing age verification code and procedures, we would greatly appreciate it if you could share it with us. Please contact John Dosset or Christina Morrow via ncai@ncai.org.
