Skills And Qualifications:

Minimum of five years’ experience in business management, preferably within small to mid-size organizations, including supervisory experience.  Experience with a Native American Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency desirable.  Individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; works effectively under pressure; ability to build positive working relationships with both internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people.  Individual must be able to understand and fully explain technical data and information.  Must be able to prepare and balance budgets; compose business reports; possess knowledge of labor law; possess knowledge of payroll compliance; and coach and counsel employees.

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or a related field required.  Master’s degree preferred.  CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification preferred. 

Duties And Responsibilities:

The Controller maximizes the return on financial assets by maintaining and revising financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems; ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions; has a thorough understanding and working experience of jurisdictional taxation; has a thorough understanding and working experience of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP);  oversees cost and general accounting, accounts receivable/payable, payroll and risk management.  Responsibilities include the overall management and supervision of the Accounting staff, and any other designated staff.  Daily attendance is essential for this position.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages and maintains the system and integrity of the accounting and financial reporting of the organization.
  • Oversees expenditures ensuring expenses are within budget limitations and allocated to proper programs and according to the relevant state and federal laws and policies of the organization.
  • Ensures all grant conditions are complied with and that the entire financial operation complies with grantee policies, procedures and standards.
  • Maintains and updates all financial compliance manuals.  Monitors applicable contracts for compliance.
  • Receives, records, deposits and disburses the funds of the organization in accordance with board appropriations, budget and program authorization.
  • Prepares and issues financial reports to the Board of Directors reflecting cash status, cash transactions, expenditures and performance in accordance with the approved budget.
  • Ensures comprehensive audit of the organization accounting is conducted annually with audit reports to be issued to the Board of Directors and funding agencies.
  • Prepares budgets and financial reports as requested; assists program directors and program coordinators with budget development and revisions; assists program directors and program coordinators with new grant proposal budgets.
  • Ensures proper filing of Form 990 tax returns.
  • Develops the Indirect Cost Proposal to submit to appropriate agency and negotiates the IDC rate.
  • Negotiates building rental contracts.  Allocates department working space.  Approves expenses within budget guidelines.
  • Oversees insurance policies (building, construction, liability, bonding, etc). Maintains files of all contracts, leases and insurance policies.


Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains, counsels, reviews and coaches the Accounting staff and any other designated staff.
  • Engages in networking activities to ensure awareness of services available.
  • Assures that all services are delivered in a culturally competent manner.
  • Participates on various committees outside and within the organization as deemed necessary and appropriate to the position and supervisor.
  • Attends all training sessions and meetings as scheduled.
  • Attends technical conferences and seminars to stay current on technological advances.
  • Performs other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Salary And Benefits:

This is a full-time opportunity working Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 40 hours per week with the work location in Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin. Limited travel may be required. The salary for this position is negotiable with benefits including Annual and Personal Leave, Holiday Pay, Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA and a 401(k) Retirement Plan. A waiting period applies for Benefits.  A background check and drug screen are required before employment.  Due to COVID-19, a period of self-isolation may be required if relocating to the area.
