President Cladoosby: Shawn Atleo’s “Resignation Is The Mark Of A True Leader”

WASHINGTON, DC – In response to the news that Assembly of First Nations’ National Chief Shawn Atleo resigned, President Brian Cladoosby of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) remarked:

“I have worked with Shawn on a number of initiatives through the years on everything from international trade to the safety of Native women. I know firsthand of his dedication to working for his people and his decision to step down is evidence of that. This action puts the debate over education at the forefront instead of the debate over his role in the legislation. Shawn’s resignation is the mark of a true leader.”

Background: On May 2, 2014, AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo stepped down from his position following an increasingly heated debate over proposed legislation that would overhaul aboriginal education. For more, click here.
