Protecting and sustaining the natural environment is of paramount importance to Tribal Nations, which are disproportionately affected by climate change. Rising temperatures and sea levels disrupt traditional fishing, farming, and gathering practices and thus threaten Native communities and cultures. As both local experts and sovereign nations, Tribal Nations need the funding and authority to respond to the urgent ecological problems specific to their communities. Tribal ecological knowledge is time-tested, climate resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective. NCAI advocates for green energy, more sustainable extractive industries, better water and air quality, protection of natural resources, and the conservation of the natural world at both the local and national level.
